The Nigerian Navy has successfully apprehended four suspected crude oil thieves and confiscated a substantial quantity of suspected illegally refined petroleum products in the Ilaje Local Council Area of Ondo State. The operation, conducted by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Igbokoda, underscores the Navy’s commitment to combating crude oil theft and illegal bunkering activities.

Acting on credible intelligence, the naval patrol team intercepted the suspects, including a principal suspect who attempted to evade capture. Commanding Officer of FOB Igbokoda, Captain Andy Alemongwa, reported the recovery of 100 jerry cans of 30 litres each, a 1,000-litre storage tank containing suspected illegally refined petroleum products, and various tools believed to have been used for siphoning crude oil.

Further interdiction efforts by the patrol team led to the apprehension of a boat operator illegally transporting petroleum products suspected to be Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The intercepted boat was found to be carrying 29 jerry cans of 50 litres each and nine jerry cans of 30 litres each of the suspected PMS.

Significantly, none of the arrested individuals could provide documentation authorizing the storage or transportation of the petroleum products, nor could they prove lawful acquisition in accordance with existing regulations. The suspects and the seized items have been transferred to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and prosecution. This decisive action by the Nigerian Navy serves as a deterrent to those engaged in illicit oil activities, reinforcing the nation’s resolve to protect its vital economic resources.

A recent development has brought the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under the spotlight, as a former House of Representatives member, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, formally requested the reopening and prosecution of alleged financial crimes involving the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar.

Through his legal representative, Hannibal Uwaifo of Sagitarian Law Firm, Agbonayinma issued a 14-day ultimatum to the commission to address this request. The demand, outlined in a letter dated August 27 and received by the EFCC on September 1, is reportedly predicated on an existing EFCC investigation and a report detailing allegations against Atiku Abubakar during his tenure as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007.
