Quick Summary:
Atiku Abubakar demands Federal Government clarification on Nasir El-Rufai’s detention, warns against secrecy and political bias in anti-corruption efforts.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep concern over the detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, calling on the Federal Government to immediately clarify his whereabouts and condition.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Atiku said El-Rufai’s health and welfare have become a serious concern to his family, friends, and associates, urging authorities to disclose which agency is responsible for holding him — whether the EFCC, ICPC, DSS, or any other security outfit.
“Secrecy Fuels Suspicion”
Atiku warned that secrecy surrounding detentions only fuels public suspicion and undermines trust in government institutions.
He stressed that whichever agency is responsible has a constitutional duty to ensure El-Rufai’s safety, dignity, and access to medical care, family, and legal representatives.
Atiku added that if authorities cannot guarantee El-Rufai’s health and rights, he should be granted bail without delay, warning that the government would be held accountable should any harm come to him.
Warning Against Selective Prosecution
Beyond El-Rufai’s case, Atiku cautioned against what he described as a growing perception of selective prosecution, alleging that opposition figures are being targeted while others are shielded from scrutiny.
He argued that the credibility of Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign depends on its fairness and transparency, not on partisan motives or coercive tactics.
Call for Transparency and Rule of Law
Atiku reiterated that transparency and respect for due process are essential to maintaining public confidence in governance.
He urged the government to uphold constitutional rights and democratic principles, emphasizing that no one should be detained without clear legal justification.
