The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNMW), Kaduna State Branch, has officially ended its indefinite strike, which commenced on October 2nd. This decision follows a series of successful negotiations with officials from the Kaduna State Government.

On Thursday, October 24, a pivotal meeting took place involving the Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, alongside union leaders and key government figures, including the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, and the Commissioner of Health. The essence of the discussions centered on addressing the welfare of health workers and reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving working conditions within the health sector.

A significant outcome of this meeting was the directive from the governor to establish a committee on Labour matters, chaired by the Deputy Governor. This committee has been tasked with expediting negotiations regarding the new minimum wage with Labour unions within the upcoming week. Importantly, the concerns of health workers will be integral to these negotiations, demonstrating the government’s dedication to enhancing the conditions under which these professionals operate.

In a circular disseminated to its members, NANNMW urged nurses and midwives to resume their duties no later than 12 PM on Friday, October 25, 2024. The circular, signed by the Public Relations Officer and Acting Secretary, Conrade Yashi G. Nassa, signifies an important transition back to normalcy in the healthcare sector.

The suspension of the strike not only facilitates the resumption of vital healthcare services but also highlights the importance of dialogue between the government and health professionals. The union expressed gratitude for the proactive approach taken by the government, emphasizing the collective goal of fostering an environment that benefits both health workers and the community they serve.

As health workers return to their posts, the ongoing negotiations regarding their welfare will be closely monitored, promising a hopeful future for healthcare in Kaduna State.

Nollywood actress Mary Njoku has recently ignited a debate regarding the necessity of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination for university admissions in Nigeria. In a statement posted on her Instagram story, Njoku questioned the need for JAMB and post-UTME, arguing that the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) should be sufficient proof of a candidate’s completion of secondary education.

Her statement comes amidst recent controversy surrounding JAMB, particularly following widespread reports of mass failures in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME). While JAMB has admitted to errors and announced retakes for affected candidates, Njoku’s questioning highlights a deeper concern regarding the redundancy and potential inefficiencies within the current university admission process.
