The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has embarked on an ambitious rehabilitation project aimed at enhancing the nation’s energy infrastructure. This initiative, as articulated by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, is poised to address persistent challenges in petroleum distribution while ensuring a more secure and efficient energy supply across the country.

The rehabilitation project, slated for completion within two to three years, is strategically designed to provide sustainable crude oil supply to refineries and facilitate seamless product distribution. By investing in the repair and modernization of pipelines and depots, NNPCL aims to reduce the country’s dependence on truck deliveries, thereby lowering transportation costs and minimizing the road hazards associated with fuel transportation.

Soneye emphasized that the initiative operates under a structured financial model, incorporating strategic partnerships to ensure effective execution. He acknowledged the financial constraints facing the project but reassured stakeholders that innovative funding approaches are being explored to facilitate the rehabilitation of both refineries and pipelines concurrently. The introduction of the Finance, Build, Operate, and Transfer (FBOT) model will be instrumental in this regard.

Furthermore, the project will not only involve the construction of new pipelines but also the deployment of advanced technology aimed at enhancing pipeline security and preventing vandalism. The rehabilitation also encompasses the modernization of storage terminals to ensure a robust support framework for energy distribution.

A cornerstone of NNPCL’s vision is to transform Nigeria into a self-sufficient producer and net exporter of refined petroleum products. The rehabilitation of the Old Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, targeted for completion by the end of 2024, marks a significant milestone in achieving this goal. Additionally, ongoing advancements in the construction of new refineries in Port Harcourt and Kaduna further exemplify NNPCL’s commitment to eliminating fuel importation.

In conclusion, the NNPCL’s pipeline and depot rehabilitation initiative is a pivotal step towards strengthening Nigeria’s energy infrastructure and ensuring a sustainable future for petroleum supply and distribution. With a focus on innovation and strategic partnerships, NNPCL is keen on making a lasting impact on the nation’s energy landscape.

The sudden closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu has drawn sharp criticism, particularly regarding the timing and lack of prior notification. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) cited a significant runway rupture requiring emergency repairs, scheduling the closure from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025, with flights diverted to nearby airports.

This action has been met with condemnation, most notably from the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide. National President Mazi Okwu Nnabuike voiced concerns about the abruptness of the closure, especially during the Easter festive period when travel among the Igbo population is typically high. He argued that the lack of adequate notice and the historical pattern of closures during significant holidays suggest a deliberate targeting of the Igbo community.

Mr. Okwu further called for transparency regarding the proposed concessioning of the airport, stating that the Minister of Aviation’s explanations have been insufficient. He emphasized that any concessioning agreement must be equitable and comparable to those applied to other major airports in Nigeria, such as Lagos, Abuja, and Kano. The Ohanaeze Youths President urged the government to adhere strictly to the announced repair schedule and to provide clear and concrete details regarding the terms of the airport’s concession.
