In a recent statement, Mr. Ben Osuagwu, a former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Imo State, has urgently called upon Governor Senator Hope Uzodinma and Police Commissioner Aboki Danjuma to intervene in the alarming situation surrounding the purported sale of the NUJ Press Centre located on the Owerri-Port Harcourt road.

Osuagwu emphasized that this Press Centre was originally bestowed upon journalists by the then military governor, Commodore Amadi Ikwechegh, complete with all necessary official documents and titles. He expressed profound dismay at the actions of individuals who, after allegedly receiving financial compensation, claim authority to sell this vital institution.

In his statement, Osuagwu described the attempted sale as “outrageous” and “insulting” to the collective integrity of journalists not only in Imo State but throughout the nation. He urged both the governor and the police commissioner to take decisive action against what he termed the “rascality” of those attempting to usurp the Press Centre.

Furthermore, Osuagwu highlighted that the matter is currently pending in court and called for restraint, urging that the legal process be allowed to unfold without interference. He firmly stated, “We say no to the illegal and criminal sale of the Imo NUJ Press Centre,” imploring Governor Uzodinma to ensure that such criminal activities do not occur under his administration.

As this situation develops, the call for accountability and protection of journalistic institutions remains paramount. The NUJ Press Centre is not merely a building; it symbolizes the freedom of the press and the rights of journalists to operate without fear of unlawful encroachments.
