Kanayo O. Kanayo Questions Military Presence in South-East Nigeria

Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has recently voiced his concerns regarding the heavy military and police presence in the South-Eastern region of Nigeria. In a poignant video shared on his Instagram page, the actor highlighted the distressing experiences faced by travelers in this area, drawing a stark comparison to his journey from Ibadan to Lagos.
Kanayo recounted his early morning trip, noting that within the span of one hour, he encountered no police or military checkpoints over a distance of 80 kilometers. In contrast, he questioned why the South-East is subjected to such extensive militarization, where travelers cannot traverse 200 kilometers without encountering multiple checkpoints.
He expressed his frustration over the humiliating treatment that passengers often endure, stating, “They humiliate people that plied same distance from Enugu-Onitsha so badly that most of the time that passengers are asked to come down with their hands up.” This statement underscores the alarming nature of security measures that seem to disproportionately affect the region.
Kanayo’s remarks raise critical questions about the status of the South-East within the broader context of Nigeria. He urged representatives to acknowledge the state of federal roads and the implications of the ongoing military presence. As the dialogue surrounding security and civil rights continues, Kanayo’s observations serve as a crucial reminder of the need for equitable treatment across all regions of Nigeria.
