According to FAAN’s official statement, signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, the Boeing 787-800 aircraft, designated UA613, encountered technical difficulties while traversing the airspace over Ivory Coast. Reports indicate a loss of cabin pressure and a sharp descent, prompting the flight to return to Lagos, where it landed safely at approximately 03:22.

Upon landing, all 256 passengers and crew members were deboarded without incident. FAAN confirmed that four passengers and two crew members sustained serious injuries, while an additional 27 passengers and five crew members experienced minor injuries. The injured were promptly taken care of by Aviation Medical ambulances, with those in critical condition transported to Duchess Hospital in Ikeja.

The emergency response team, including Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS), was on standby and responded within minutes of the distress call made at 01:20. Subsequently, the passengers were provided with immediate assistance, with some requiring overnight accommodation in a hotel.

FAAN has assured that the aircraft sustained no significant damage, underscoring the effectiveness of the emergency procedures in place. Enugu Airport Closure Sparks Controversy.

The sudden closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu has drawn sharp criticism, particularly regarding the timing and lack of prior notification. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) cited a significant runway rupture requiring emergency repairs, scheduling the closure from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025, with flights diverted to nearby airports.

This action has been met with condemnation, most notably from the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide. National President Mazi Okwu Nnabuike voiced concerns about the abruptness of the closure, especially during the Easter festive period when travel among the Igbo population is typically high. He argued that the lack of adequate notice and the historical pattern of closures during significant holidays suggest a deliberate targeting of the Igbo community.

Mr. Okwu further called for transparency regarding the proposed concessioning of the airport, stating that the Minister of Aviation’s explanations have been insufficient. He emphasized that any concessioning agreement must be equitable and comparable to those applied to other major airports in Nigeria, such as Lagos, Abuja, and Kano. The Ohanaeze Youths President urged the government to adhere strictly to the announced repair schedule and to provide clear and concrete details regarding the terms of the airport’s concession.
