Edo State Governor Achieves Significant Milestone in Firearms Recovery and Security Enhancements.

In a momentous announcement on Thursday, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo revealed the recovery of over 3,500 illegal firearms within the state over the past 100 days. This achievement was disclosed during an event commemorating his first three months in office, following his election as governor on September 21, 2024.
Governor Okpebholo attributed the success to targeted efforts against remnants of the defunct Edo State Security Network (ESSN), which operated under the previous administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki. Emphasizing the non-negotiable nature of public safety, he articulated his administration’s proactive stance against crime through the reconstitution of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC).
In addition to this strategic reorganization, the governor announced amendments to existing anti-cultism and kidnapping laws, which introduced more stringent penalties aimed at curtailing violent crime. He noted that these decisive measures have resulted in a notable decrease in cult-related violence throughout the state.
To further bolster security initiatives, the governor reported the procurement of 75 Toyota Hilux vehicles and 350 motorcycles intended to enhance mobility and ensure rapid response capabilities for security agencies. “For my administration, security is not negotiable,” he affirmed, reiterating their commitment to confronting criminal activities head-on.
Governor Okpebholo, a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was sworn into office on November 12, 2024, after winning the governorship election against notable opponents, including Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
As Governor Okpebholo’s administration continues to implement these critical measures, the recovery of illegal firearms and the strengthening of law enforcement capabilities mark a pivotal step towards securing the safety and well-being of the citizens of Edo State.

Enugu Airport Closure Sparks Controversy.

The sudden closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu has drawn sharp criticism, particularly regarding the timing and lack of prior notification. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) cited a significant runway rupture requiring emergency repairs, scheduling the closure from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025, with flights diverted to nearby airports.
This action has been met with condemnation, most notably from the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide. National President Mazi Okwu Nnabuike voiced concerns about the abruptness of the closure, especially during the Easter festive period when travel among the Igbo population is typically high. He argued that the lack of adequate notice and the historical pattern of closures during significant holidays suggest a deliberate targeting of the Igbo community.
Mr. Okwu further called for transparency regarding the proposed concessioning of the airport, stating that the Minister of Aviation’s explanations have been insufficient. He emphasized that any concessioning agreement must be equitable and comparable to those applied to other major airports in Nigeria, such as Lagos, Abuja, and Kano. The Ohanaeze Youths President urged the government to adhere strictly to the announced repair schedule and to provide clear and concrete details regarding the terms of the airport’s concession.
