Zamfara Assembly suspends Kaura Namoda and Bukkuyum LG chairmen over alleged financial irregularities and non-compliance with legislative summons.
The Zamfara State House of Assembly has ordered the suspension of the chairmen of Kaura Namoda and Bukkuyum local government areas, Mannir Mu’azu Haidara and Umar A. Faru, over alleged financial irregularities.
The decision was reached during plenary on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, following the consideration of a report on the financial operations of the state’s 14 local government councils for the 2025 fiscal year.
Committee Report Triggers Action
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Bello Madaro Kurya, the report was presented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Adamu Aliyu Gumm, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The committee’s findings led to the recommendation for suspension after both chairmen failed to respond to multiple invitations to clarify issues surrounding the use of council funds.
Speaker Moriki Presides Over Decision
The plenary, presided over by Speaker Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, unanimously approved the recommendation, directing that the suspension take immediate effect pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
The affected chairmen were also instructed to hand over administrative responsibilities to their vice chairmen without delay.
Lawmakers Cite Accountability Concerns
The Assembly cited non-compliance with legislative summons, alongside concerns over accountability and transparency, as the basis for the disciplinary action.
The House further adopted the full report on the 2025 financial activities of all 14 local government areas and forwarded its resolutions to the executive arm for implementation.
