Tragedy Strikes Mokwa Town as Flooding Claims Lives in Mokwa, Niger State.
Mokwa, the headquarters of the Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State, has been struck by a devastating natural disaster. A recent heavy downpour has resulted in severe flooding, causing widespread damage and a tragic loss of life.
Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi confirmed to DAILY POST that the aftermath of the heavy rain saw floodwaters inundating homes, washing away properties and, tragically, human lives. As of the latest report, 15 bodies have been recovered, and search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate additional victims, with the faint hope of finding survivors.
Muregi further indicated that the intense rainfall, accompanied by a powerful storm, originated in the vicinity of Mashegu, inflicting considerable suffering on the affected population.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has officially acknowledged the incident and is currently in the process of collecting comprehensive data to assess the full scope of the disaster. Dr. Ibrahim Audu Hussaini, the agency’s Director of Information and Special Duties, has assured the public that the findings will be released in due course.
Rescue teams are actively engaged in retrieving bodies from the floodwaters. However, a significant number of individuals remain unaccounted for, particularly in areas where homes were completely submerged. The scale of the disaster has left the community in a state of profound shock. The full extent of the damage and the total number of casualties are yet to be determined as rescue and assessment efforts continue.
