President Bola Tinubu removes Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, appoints AIG Tunji Disu as new police chief.
President Bola Tinubu has removed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu as his replacement.
Sources confirmed that the decision followed a directive from the President for Egbetokun to resign his position, which was conveyed during a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday.
Background of Egbetokun’s Tenure
Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector General of Police on June 19, 2023, and his appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.
At the time of his appointment, he was 58 years old and was originally due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory age of 60. However, his tenure was controversially extended by President Tinubu.
Disu Takes Over Leadership of the Police
The newly appointed AIG Tunji Disu is expected to assume office immediately, marking a new phase in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu, known for his operational experience and leadership in tactical policing, previously served in various capacities, including as Commander of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
His appointment is seen as part of Tinubu’s broader effort to restructure key security institutions and enhance internal security management across the country.
