Tinubu Extends Adeniyi’s Tenure By Six Months
President Bola Tinubu has approved another six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday by Presidential Media Aide, Bayo Onanuga.
Adeniyi’s tenure was first extended by one year in 2025, and was originally scheduled to expire on August 1, 2026. The new extension will now run until February 2027.
Purpose Of The Extension
According to Onanuga, the extension is intended to enable Adeniyi to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window — a key trade facilitation initiative — and to ensure an orderly succession within the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
During the transition period, Adeniyi, in collaboration with the NCS Board, will oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the retirement of officers who have either attained 60 years of age or completed 35 years of service.
Background
Adeniyi, a career customs officer, joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s.
He has been credited with driving several modernization and digital transformation initiatives within the service, including the automation of customs processes and the promotion of trade efficiency through technology-driven reforms.
The latest extension underscores the administration’s confidence in his leadership as the NCS continues to implement key reforms aimed at improving revenue generation and border management.
