The police have declined to release Speed Darlington, despite a court order requiring them to do so – Adeyanju

Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has voiced his indignation regarding the ongoing detention of rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, despite a Federal High Court order issued on December 23, granting him bail. Speed Darlington has been held in police custody since November 27, following his re-arrest by the Nigerian police in Owerri, Imo State.
Reports indicate that his initial arrest in October was connected to a petition filed by fellow artist Burna Boy. The recent ruling by the Federal High Court mandated Speed Darlington’s unconditional release, stipulating that his legal team only needed to present the court order to the police legal department for processing. This order was expected to be forwarded to the Force Investigation Department (FID), where he is currently detained.
However, despite the legal team’s compliance in submitting the necessary documentation, the police have yet to effect Speed Darlington’s release. This delay raises serious concerns regarding the adherence to judicial directives by law enforcement.
In a statement on his X account, Adeyanju condemned the police’s actions, characterizing them as a blatant disregard for judicial authority. He stated, “The Nigerian Police have refused to release Speed Darlington a.k.a AKPI despite the explicit order of the Federal High Court to do so. This is the highest form of disrespect to the judiciary.”
The situation highlights ongoing issues surrounding the enforcement of legal orders in Nigeria and the need for accountability within law enforcement agencies. The continued detention of Speed Darlington, despite clear judicial instructions, calls for immediate attention and action to uphold the rule of law.
