Oludipe David, the Nigerian singer known to many as Spyro, has recently shared a poignant narrative of personal struggle and ultimate triumph. In a revealing interview with Frank Edoho, Spyro delved into the depths of his battle with atychiphobia – the fear of failure – and the significant impact his father’s words had on his formative years.

Spyro recounted a childhood marked by his father’s harsh criticisms, which led him to internalize a sense of inadequacy. He confessed to grappling with poor academic performance in secondary school, a challenge that extended into his university years where he doubted his ability to complete his degree. This psychological burden stemmed from the deeply ingrained fear of failure.

“I thought I was going to die broke,” Spyro admitted, highlighting the pervasive nature of his anxieties. “I always had this fear of failure. And my dad contributed to that. He took every opportunity he got to always tell me that I am a failure.”

However, Spyro’s story is not one of perpetual despair. He credits his personal relationship with God as the catalyst for overcoming his fear. This newfound faith provided him with the strength to persevere, even when on the brink of abandoning his musical aspirations. In fact, he had already begun exploring interior design before his breakthrough hit, ‘Who Is Your Guy,’ propelled him into the limelight in 2022.

The viral success of ‘Who Is Your Guy’ marked a turning point in Spyro’s career. The subsequent remix featuring Tiwa Savage in 2023 further cemented his position in the Nigerian music scene. The song’s recognition at the 16th Headies Awards, where it won Best Collaboration, serves as a tangible testament to Spyro’s resilience and artistic talent.

Spyro’s journey from battling deep-seated fears to achieving musical acclaim offers a powerful message of hope and the potential for self-transformation. His story serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity and negative influences, one can overcome their limitations and achieve remarkable success. It underscores the importance of self-belief, perseverance, and the transformative power of faith in navigating life’s challenges.
