Zakari spoke on Sunday while emergency workers were still battling the remaining flames, noting that the fire had destroyed several sections of the popular market.
Possible Causes of the Fire
Zakari explained that the market was extremely crowded on Saturday, as weekends usually attract large numbers of customers, especially with Ramadan approaching.
He said the fire started at a shop known as Gilas, located at a corner of the market.
He added that the fire spread rapidly, causing panic among traders and customers, and described the speed and intensity of the flames as terrifying.
Call for Market Expansion
Zakari reminded the public that the government had earlier promised to expand the market to reduce congestion and help prevent future disasters.
He urged authorities to fulfil that promise, stressing that overcrowding and poor infrastructure continue to make the market vulnerable to such incidents.
