Quick Summary:
Senate Committee endorses N140 billion spending plan for North Central Development Commission, with 86% allocated to capital projects targeting infrastructure, agriculture, and empowerment.
The Senate Committee on the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) has approved the commission’s proposed N140 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year.
The approval followed a budget defence session held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, where the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Cyril Yiltsen Tsenyil, presented details of the spending plan.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the Director of Corporate Services, James Uloko.
86% of Budget Allocated to Capital Projects
Dr. Tsenyil explained that approximately 86% of the proposed allocation is dedicated to capital projects, while the remaining funds will cover personnel and overhead costs.
He noted that the 2026 budget proposal aims to strengthen the commission’s operational base and implement strategic initiatives designed to promote sustainable development across the North Central region.
Committee Commends Development Focus
Committee Chairman, Senator Titus Zam, described the strong capital component of the budget as a positive step for the region, provided it is effectively implemented.
He stated that the panel had carefully scrutinised the estimates and would maintain strict oversight to ensure that resources are channelled into critical sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, empowerment programmes, and economic growth.
Other senators who participated in the review commended the commission’s development priorities but urged it to address security challenges affecting parts of the North Central.
They called for targeted interventions to support displaced persons and mitigate the impact of insecurity on livelihoods and economic activities.
Call for Stakeholder Engagement
The committee also emphasised the importance of sustained stakeholder engagement to foster community participation and ensure the success of the commission’s programmes.
