In a display of solidarity and support, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dispatched a high-level Federal Government delegation to Niger State to express condolences to the government and people of the state in the wake of the recent devastating floods that ravaged Mokwa and its environs. The tragic incident resulted in significant loss of life, widespread displacement of residents, and extensive destruction of property, prompting immediate action from the Federal Government.

The delegation, which includes the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Mr. Yakubu Garba. During the visit, Minister Idris conveyed President Tinubu’s heartfelt condolences, emphasizing the President’s deep sadness and solidarity with those affected by the disaster.

“We are here on the directive of Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu… to commiserate with you; to sympathize and empathize with you on what has happened in Mokwa Local Government Area,” stated Minister Idris, highlighting the President’s directive to deploy all available Federal Government resources to the affected area.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has already conducted a comprehensive assessment of the situation and mobilized resources to provide immediate relief and support to affected communities, working in close collaboration with the Niger State Government. Minister Idris also noted the President’s concern regarding the recurrence of such disasters, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring adequate preparedness and mitigation measures are in place for future incidents. Furthermore, the President has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to collaborate with state governments to intensify public sensitization efforts, particularly in flood-prone communities, to promote adherence to early warning signs and encourage proactive preventive measures.

Prof. Yilwatda, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, stated that the government is exploring avenues for additional support for displaced persons and has directed the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons to assume responsibility for the continued care and support of those displaced by the disaster, taking over from NEMA.

Deputy Governor Garba expressed the Niger State Government’s profound gratitude to the Federal Government for its swift and compassionate response, acknowledging President Tinubu’s rapid intervention as a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens. The Federal Government’s prompt response underscores its commitment to providing timely assistance and support to communities affected by natural disasters and ensuring the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.
