Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has described Nigeria as “the worst place to be born,” citing the country’s deepening economic and social challenges.
In an Independence Day message marking Nigeria’s 66th anniversary, Obi criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government for failing to fulfil its 2023 campaign promises. He said poverty, insecurity, unemployment and hunger had continued to worsen.
According to Obi, more than 140 million Nigerians are living in poverty, while over 80 million children are out of school. He also raised concerns about increasing banditry and kidnapping, including the reported deaths of 37 young people.
The former Anambra State governor further warned that approximately 40 million Nigerians could face severe food shortages by the end of the year. He said youth unemployment had exceeded 35 million and described Nigeria’s drug prevalence as among the highest in the world.
Obi’s remarks highlight growing concerns over the country’s economic hardship, insecurity and declining access to education and basic necessities.
