A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has explained why former Bauchi State governor, Sule Lamido, was barred from participating in the Ibadan National Convention that produced the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC).
Speaking on Arise News Morning Show, Sani said Lamido failed to follow the proper procedure for obtaining the chairmanship nomination form, adding that he only expressed interest on the final day for submission and went to the wrong office to purchase the form.
PDP Defends Its Decision
Sani said the party’s decision to exclude Lamido was in line with its constitution, insisting that allowing him to contest without a valid form would have violated internal rules.
He added that the party intends to formulate its arguments before the Supreme Court, claiming that the Court of Appeal failed to consider the wisdom behind the party’s actions.
Legal Battle Over Ibadan Convention
Lamido had earlier approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleging that he was denied his right to contest for the national chairmanship position.
However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja recently declared the Ibadan National Convention illegal, while also affirming the suspension of the Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led faction, which is backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Sani maintained that the PDP’s actions were guided by its constitution and that the matter would likely proceed to the Supreme Court for final determination.
