In a statement signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, and issued on Tuesday, the party said the Senate’s addendum allowing manual transmission where technology fails was a disguised attempt to reverse progress made in electoral reforms.
“Manual Transmission Already Covered by Law”
The PDP argued that manual result transmission is already sufficiently provided for under the existing Electoral Act, stressing that the current push for electronic transmission is meant to introduce a second-layer authentication mechanism to prevent result manipulation.
The party questioned the Senate’s logic, noting that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which successfully handles accreditation, cannot suddenly be deemed unreliable for transmitting results.
PDP Targets Akpabio, Warns Against Political Self-Interest
The PDP alleged that the Senate’s caveat reflects deep-seated fear among lawmakers opposed to electronic transmission, particularly Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The PDP urged the Conference Committee to adopt the version of the Electoral Amendment Bill passed by the House of Representatives, which supports electronic transmission without loopholes.
“History Will Remember Those Who Undermine Democracy”
The PDP warned that any attempt to weaken electoral transparency would have historical consequences.
The party also called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in demanding real-time electronic transmission of results.
