NAFDAC Uncovers Major Operation Dealing in Expired and Falsified Drugs in Abia State.

On Friday, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) announced a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat the circulation of counterfeit pharmaceuticals. The agency uncovered a major operation depot located in Umumeje village, within the Osisioma Ngwa area of Abia State, which was engaged in the distribution of expired and falsified drugs.
In a statement released on X, NAFDAC detailed that the illegal operation was conducted from multiple buildings situated near the Ariaria International Market. The agency discovered that expired medicines were being repackaged and revalidated for resale, thereby posing a substantial health risk to consumers. Among the seized items were expired potassium chloride, various allergy medications, immune boosters, and cholesterol treatments. Additionally, machinery used for rebranding and altering expiry dates was found on-site.
The operation, executed in collaboration with security agencies, resulted in the arrest of several individuals linked to the illegal activities. However, the primary suspect remains at large, showing a lack of concern for the detained individuals associated with the operation.
NAFDAC has reiterated its commitment to eradicating the distribution of substandard and falsified drugs in Nigeria. The agency is currently reviewing its legal framework to impose stricter penalties on individuals and organizations involved in the production and distribution of dangerous pharmaceutical products. This initiative underscores the Federal Government’s dedication to safeguarding public health and ensuring the integrity of the nation’s pharmaceutical supply chain.
