NACA Director General Urges United Front Against HIV in Taraba State.

Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), has expressed concern over the 2.9% HIV prevalence rate in Taraba State, emphasizing the critical need for intensified and collaborative efforts to achieve the 2030 goal of ending AIDS. Speaking at the inauguration of the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) and Paediatric HIV Acceleration Committee (PPAC) in Jalingo, Dr. Ilori called for sustained action from all stakeholders.

Dismissing recent concerns regarding antiretroviral drug availability, Dr. Ilori affirmed their continued free distribution nationwide, clarifying any misconceptions related to USAID support.

Dr. Bako Ali Istifanus, Director General of the Taraba State AIDS Control Agency (TACA), hailed the PPAC inauguration as a significant step in protecting vulnerable women and children, aiming to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV within the state. He pledged Taraba State’s unwavering commitment to the committee’s success and lauded Dr. Ilori’s leadership at NACA. The establishment of the PPAC signifies a strategic effort to enhance coordination and improve the delivery of quality healthcare across Taraba State in the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS.

IED Attack Claims Lives on Maiduguri-Damboa Road.

Reports indicate a devastating incident occurred on Saturday along the Maiduguri-Damboa Road. An Improvised Explosive Device (IED), allegedly planted by Boko Haram terrorists, detonated as a military-escorted convoy transporting passengers from Damboa to Maiduguri traversed the route.

Tragically, at least seven commuters lost their lives in the explosion, and an unspecified number sustained injuries. The injured are currently receiving medical treatment in Maiduguri.

The Maiduguri-Damboa Road, a vital artery connecting Maiduguri to several southern Borno local government areas, has been a known area of Boko Haram activity for over a decade. Though reopened under military escort, this recent attack underscores the persistent security challenges in the region and the ongoing threat posed by IEDs. Investigations are likely underway to determine the specifics of the attack and prevent future occurrences.

BIPC Launches Eco-Friendly Taxi Service in Benue State

The Benue Investment and Property Company Limited (BIPC) has initiated a modern and sustainable transportation solution with the introduction of its “Green Wheels” taxi service. The company recently received a delivery of 20 electric and solar-powered vehicles, marking the commencement of operations across Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo.

BIPC Managing Director Raymond Asemakaha stated the initiative aims to reduce transportation costs, offer improved value for residents, and generate employment opportunities. The long-term objective is to expand the fleet to 100 electric vehicles.

The Green Wheels taxis are equipped with zero-emission technology, geofencing capabilities for location tracking, and integrated CCTV for enhanced passenger security. A dedicated assembling and charging plant will be established at the BIPC Mergemax station to facilitate maintenance. A mobile application is also under development to streamline ride booking.

Mr. Asemakaha highlighted the project as a strategic intervention by the state government to alleviate the financial burden of rising transport costs on commuters. This initiative underscores Benue State’s commitment to sustainable mobility and a better quality of life for its citizens.
