Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde cautions that Nigeria’s democracy faces danger of one-party dominance, urges protection of opposition and accountability.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed fresh concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the country may be sliding toward a one-party system.

In a newsletter titled “The Business of Governance,” Makinde said that voices opposing the emergence of a one-party state are increasingly facing intimidation, while opposition groups are being sidelined.

He cautioned that the nation appears to be drifting into a phase of silence, apathy, and disengagement, a trend he described as potentially irreversible if not addressed.

Concerns Over Political And Institutional Trends

Makinde referenced recent developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and decisions by INEC and the judiciary, noting that these raise serious questions about the future of democratic balance in Nigeria.

He added that a healthy democracy depends on balance, credible alternatives, strong institutions, and citizens’ confidence in governance processes.

Warning Against Intimidation And Weak Opposition

Makinde lamented that voices speaking against one-party dominance are being openly threatened, while opposition parties are fragmented and constrained.

He urged Nigerians not to dismiss these concerns, emphasizing that democratic accountability is essential for addressing the nation’s pressing issues.

Transition And Governance In Oyo State

Makinde also addressed the ongoing transition process in Oyo State, assuring citizens that his administration is engaging credible individuals to ensure continuity and stability.

He said a decision on the state’s future leadership direction would be communicated in due course, reflecting both past progress and future goals.
