The continued detention of Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) remains shrouded in ambiguity. According to activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju, who met with VDM in custody on Monday, the EFCC has yet to provide a clear rationale for his arrest.

Despite earlier reports suggesting petitions had been filed against the social media influencer, Adeyanju states that the Commission has denied the existence of any such complaint. In a Facebook post, Adeyanju explained, “We still cannot understand why he was arrested. EFCC said there’s no petition against him after our repeated demand.”

This development contradicts previous reports, including one from BBC Pidgin, which cited EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale as confirming the existence of petitions. The Commission’s subsequent denial has further compounded the confusion surrounding the circumstances of VDM’s detention, leaving many questioning the legal basis for his continued confinement. The situation warrants further clarification from the EFCC to ensure transparency and adherence to due process.
