Security operatives arrested at Lagos MM2 Airport with $6.1 million undeclared cash while attempting to board an Aero Contractors flight.
LagosAirportCashBust has raised serious security and accountability concerns after several individuals believed to be security operatives were arrested at Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MM2) in Ikeja, Lagos, for attempting to board a domestic flight with over $6.1 million in undeclared cash.
The group was intercepted on Saturday while trying to board an Aero Contractors flight, following suspicions raised during routine screening.
How the Arrest Happened
According to multiple airport sources, the suspects were found with several large boxes filled with U.S. dollars. They had reportedly passed initial security checks without incident before Aero Contractors staff noticed the unusually heavy luggage near the aircraft.
Suspects Claimed to Be Security Agents
Sanusi revealed that the men claimed to be security operatives escorting a suspect and accompanying evidence, which initially allowed them to bypass certain checks.
However, their suspicious behavior at the boarding gate prompted Aviation Security (AVSEC) officers to intervene.
Upon further inspection, the AVSEC team escalated the matter, handing the suspects over to the Department of State Services (DSS). The DSS later transferred the case to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.
Abuse of Law Enforcement Privileges
Airport officials expressed concern over what they described as an apparent abuse of law enforcement privileges.
The incident has sparked discussions about airport security oversight, cash movement regulations, and the misuse of official cover by individuals claiming to represent security agencies.
