Lagos State Government Addresses Illegal Structures in Ikeja GRA.
On Saturday, the Lagos State Government initiated an enforcement exercise focused on removing illegal structures and makeshift shanties within the Ikeja Government Reserved Area (GRA). Led by Mr. Gbolahan Oki, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), the operation aims to address security and environmental concerns stemming from these unauthorized constructions.
LASBCA officials dismantled wooden stalls, shacks, and other unauthorized buildings deemed to be in violation of state planning regulations along key streets. Mr. Oki emphasized that the exercise targeted illegal conversions, unapproved structures, and locations allegedly harboring illicit activities, including the sale of stolen goods. He clarified that property owners were notified in advance to present building approvals for verification.
The government action, lauded by community leaders as “long overdue,” underscores the state’s commitment to maintaining public safety, upholding urban planning regulations, and preserving the integrity of the Ikeja GRA. Non-compliant structures will be marked for correction, with demolition as the consequence for failure to comply.
