The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kebbi State has issued a strong rebuttal to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding its recent criticisms of the ₦75,000 minimum wage for local government workers. In a statement released on Saturday, Murtala Usman, the state NLC Chairman, affirmed that the primary responsibility of the union is to advocate for the welfare and interests of workers, rather than to serve as an extension of governmental authority.

While acknowledging the importance of a robust opposition in a democratic framework, Usman emphasized that constructive dialogue focused on the welfare of workers is far preferable to unfounded critique. He stated, “The welfare of local government employees is critical. These individuals form the backbone of our communities, and their well-being should be a shared priority.”

Usman lauded Governor Nasiru Idris for his prompt action in implementing the ₦75,000 minimum wage following federal approval, underscoring that Kebbi State is distinguished as one of the few regions to execute this increase without delay. He noted that the governor’s commitment has led to tangible improvements in the quality of life for workers.

Reflecting on historical wage challenges, Usman recalled previous increments, such as the ₦18,000 and ₦30,000 thresholds, that suffered under partial implementation at the local government level. He urged the PDP to collaborate with the NLC in advocating for enhanced worker welfare, rather than adopting a confrontational stance.

In response, the PDP has raised concerns about alleged inconsistencies in the payment of the minimum wage. Alhaji Sani Dododo, the party’s Public Relations Officer, questioned the existence of “two versions” of the minimum wage and claimed that many local government employees, particularly those on lower grade levels, continue to receive significantly less than the stipulated ₦75,000.

Dododo asserted the necessity for the government to prioritize the welfare of teachers and to fulfill its commitments to education, recognizing the pivotal role educators play in societal development. In light of these assertions, the NLC has reiterated its call for a cooperative partnership with the PDP to enhance workers’ conditions for the benefit of the communities they serve.

In conclusion, fostering a collaborative approach towards resolving workers’ issues will ultimately strengthen both governance and community welfare in Kebbi State.

Case Dismissed: Federal Charges Against Mayor Adams Dropped.

On Wednesday, District Court Judge Dale Ho dismissed, with prejudice, the federal criminal case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. This action effectively terminates the possibility of the Department of Justice (DOJ) resurrecting the five-count indictment against the Democrat in the US District Court in Manhattan.

The dismissal follows a controversial request by the Trump administration, nearly two months prior, to drop the corruption charges. The DOJ argued that prosecution would impede Mayor Adams’ ability to govern New York City and collaborate with the administration’s immigration enforcement policies.

The request prompted significant internal dissent, culminating in the resignation of seven federal prosecutors, including the acting Manhattan US attorney. Their departure underscores the contentious nature of the decision to seek dismissal and the ethical questions it raised within the Department. The “with prejudice” ruling solidifies the finality of this complex and closely watched legal battle.
