The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Joash Amupitan, on Saturday visited several polling units during the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election to assess the conduct of the exercise.
At Polling Unit 016 in Area 8, one of the locations visited, the All Progressives Congress (APC) party agent, Stephen Osadebe, raised concerns over voter apathy and the late arrival of sensitive materials.
Reports of Poor Logistics and Low Turnout
Observers at the scene noted that some INEC ad-hoc workers were not provided with chairs or tables, making it difficult for them to perform their duties effectively.
A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving as an ad-hoc staff described the turnout as “not very good, but not very poor.”
APC Agent Decries Voter Apathy
APC agent Stephen Osadebe expressed frustration over the low voter turnout, stressing the need for greater voter sensitization before future elections.
He added that while INEC ensures votes count, the lack of participation undermines the democratic process.
INEC Promises Smooth Election Process
Responding to the concerns, INEC Chairman Prof Amupitan assured party agents and voters that the Commission was working to ensure smooth and credible elections across the FCT.
He reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to transparency, efficiency, and voter confidence in the electoral process.
