IkotEkpeneClarification has emerged following the Akwa Ibom State Police Command’s dismissal of false media reports claiming that gunmen raided a students’ lodge in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, abducted 15 students, and carted away valuables.
The Command described the reports as misleading and capable of causing public panic, clarifying that the alleged incident was actually an operation conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Police Refute Abduction Claims
In a statement issued on Sunday, October 26, 2025, in Uyo, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, stated that no abduction took place and that the supposed “armed men” were EFCC operatives from the Uyo Zonal Office.
EFCC Operation Mistaken for Armed Attack
DSP John explained that the Police had received a distress call around 4:30 a.m. on October 24, 2025, alleging an armed robbery attack at Ikot Uboh Village in Ikot Ekpene.
Upon arrival, it was discovered that the armed men were EFCC operatives conducting a sanctioned operation that led to the arrest of some individuals.
Police Caution Media on Sensational Reporting
The Command urged journalists and media houses to verify security-related information before publication, warning that sensational or inaccurate reports could create unnecessary panic among residents.
