Former President Muhammadu Buhari Passes Away at 82.
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82, according to an announcement made by President Bola Tinubu’s spokesperson. The announcement stated that Buhari passed away in London at approximately 4:30 PM (15:30 GMT) on July 13th, following a prolonged illness.
Buhari’s ascent to the presidency in 2015 marked a significant moment in Nigerian history, as he became the first opposition candidate to unseat a sitting president through the ballot box. A retired major general who previously led Nigeria in the 1980s following a military coup, Buhari later transitioned to civilian politics, projecting an image of a “converted democrat.”
Throughout his presidency, Buhari was known for his commitment to fighting corruption and his austere lifestyle. However, his administration faced challenges in curbing rising insecurity, with armed violence spreading across the country. Despite these challenges, Buhari’s legacy remains as a symbol of democratic change in Nigeria.
