In a recent statement, Amaju Pinnick, a member of the FIFA Council, disclosed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will announce its long-awaited verdict regarding the controversial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya either today or tomorrow. This announcement follows a distressing incident where the Super Eagles players and officials were held hostage for several hours at Al Abaq Airport upon their arrival for the match.

The Super Eagles ultimately decided to boycott the match and returned to Nigeria in light of the circumstances. Pinnick emphasized the seriousness of the situation during an interview with Arise Television, noting that it was a focal point of discussion during CAF’s recent executive committee meeting.

“CAF is taking this issue very seriously,” Pinnick remarked, highlighting the integrity and commitment to Pan-Africanism embodied by CAF President Patrice Motsepe. He underscored the gravity of the incident, stating, “We pointed out the fact that this is very serious because anything could have happened (to the Super Eagles).”

As the football community awaits CAF’s decision, it is clear that the governing body is committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of the sport across the continent. Pinnick’s assurances reflect a broader commitment to addressing such critical issues within African football.
