FCT Residents Demand Improved Telecom Services Following Tariff Hike.

Recent increases in telecommunication tariffs have sparked discontent among consumers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), subscribers voiced frustration over persistent network issues that plague service delivery despite the higher costs.
Consumers like Mr. Ogah Paul highlighted issues such as unreliable internet access and slow data speeds, even with ample data allowance. Mr. Victor James echoed these concerns, citing delayed data plan activation and overall unsatisfactory network performance.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has stated its commitment to holding service providers accountable for poor performance. However, subscribers are urging Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to proactively address these ongoing service deficiencies and ensure that service quality reflects the adjusted tariff structure. While some users, like Ms. Josephine Tanko, report positive experiences, the prevalent sentiment remains one of dissatisfaction, pushing for tangible improvements in network infrastructure and service reliability.

Extortion Allegations on Calabar Police by Motorists and Road Users.

Recent reports have surfaced detailing allegations of widespread extortion by officers of the Nigerian Police Force in the vicinity of the Atakpa police station in Calabar. These allegations follow a tragic incident on March 23, 2025, where Inspector Effiong Bassey reportedly shot and killed two individuals and injured others.
According to sources, police teams consisting of six operatives are regularly deployed to Calabar Road near Watt Market, where they purportedly conduct stop and search operations. However, eyewitness accounts suggest that these operations are a facade for systematic extortion, with officers allegedly demanding N200 to N500 from commercial bus drivers. Drivers report being threatened with firearms and subjected to lengthy delays for non-compliance.
These allegations extend beyond the Atakpa station, with reports indicating similar extortion practices on Marian Road and other Calabar suburbs, occurring both day and night. Drivers claim that the stated purpose of checking vehicle documentation is merely a pretext for soliciting bribes.
When approached for comment, one officer, identifying himself as Peter, reportedly reacted with hostility and threats. Attempts to reach the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olusegun Omosanyin, were unsuccessful. The state Deputy PPRO, Igri Ewa, stated that the information would be verified. These allegations raise serious concerns about police conduct and the need for immediate investigation and accountability.
