Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that he would have joined the recent protest against the National Assembly led by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, if he had been in Nigeria.

El-Rufai made the disclosure during an interview on Trust TV, where he criticised the Senate’s handling of the proposed electoral reforms and accused political interests of delaying the process.

Calls for Real-Time Electronic Transmission

El-Rufai emphasised that real-time electronic transmission of election results is essential to prevent electoral manipulation and strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

He argued that the adoption of real-time transmission would make rigging far more difficult, accusing the ruling party of resisting the reform for political survival.

Criticism of the Senate’s Delay

The former governor noted that while the House of Representatives had already supported the reform, the Senate was yet to align with the move, suggesting that vested political interests were influencing the delay.

El-Rufai’s remarks add to the growing public pressure on the National Assembly to restore mandatory electronic transmission in the Electoral Act amendment, a reform widely viewed as key to ensuring transparent elections in 2027.
