Recent drone activity has caused significant disruption to air traffic in Denmark, raising concerns about national security. Multiple airports, including Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sonderborg, and the Skrydstrup air base, have reported drone sightings. The incident at Aalborg resulted in a temporary airport closure.
Danish authorities are investigating the incidents, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen labeling the Copenhagen airport drone incident as the “most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure” to date. The investigation involves the Danish intelligence service and armed forces. Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard announced plans to enhance drone detection and neutralization capabilities.
These events occur amidst heightened tensions in Europe, following similar incidents in Poland and Romania, and airspace violations by Russian fighter jets in Estonia. Denmark’s announcement to acquire long-range precision weapons, citing the Russian threat, adds another layer to the situation. Moscow has denied involvement in the drone incidents and airspace violations.
