Clarification on the Status of INEC Chairman Professor Yakubu Mahmood.

In light of recent false reports circulating in social media regarding the alleged death of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Yakubu Mahmood, the Commission has officially responded to quash these claims. It has been firmly stated that Professor Mahmood is, in fact, “hale and hearty” and has not traveled to London for the past two years.
Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, reiterated that the misleading narrative emerged on December 9, 2024, and urged the public to dismiss such rumors as unfounded. He highlighted that Professor Mahmood participated in significant meetings with both the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on December 11, 2024, and with Resident Electoral Commissioners the following day. Both engagements received extensive media coverage, reinforcing the Chairman’s active presence.
The INEC also cautioned against the proliferation of misinformation, reminding the public of a similar incident that occurred three years prior. The Commission emphasized the harmful implications of such rumors on individuals and society at large.
In its commitment to transparency and truth, INEC vowed to continue collaborating with media outlets to combat the spread of fake news and misinformation. As guardians of electoral integrity, they strive to uphold factual narratives that contribute to informed public discourse.

Case Dismissed: Federal Charges Against Mayor Adams Dropped.

On Wednesday, District Court Judge Dale Ho dismissed, with prejudice, the federal criminal case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. This action effectively terminates the possibility of the Department of Justice (DOJ) resurrecting the five-count indictment against the Democrat in the US District Court in Manhattan.
The dismissal follows a controversial request by the Trump administration, nearly two months prior, to drop the corruption charges. The DOJ argued that prosecution would impede Mayor Adams’ ability to govern New York City and collaborate with the administration’s immigration enforcement policies.
The request prompted significant internal dissent, culminating in the resignation of seven federal prosecutors, including the acting Manhattan US attorney. Their departure underscores the contentious nature of the decision to seek dismissal and the ethical questions it raised within the Department. The “with prejudice” ruling solidifies the finality of this complex and closely watched legal battle.
