In a notable legal development, American rapper Dajua Blanding, widely recognized by her stage name Dank DeMoss, has initiated a lawsuit against the ride-hailing company Lyft, alleging weight discrimination. This incident, which has garnered significant media attention, arose when a Lyft driver reportedly refused to provide service to DeMoss, citing her size as the reason.
DeMoss, a 489-pound artist from Detroit, expressed her feelings of humiliation following the incident, which she documented on her cellphone and subsequently shared on TikTok. In an interview with CBS News, she stated, “I was hurt and embarrassed. I have been in that same type of car many times and never had an issue. This was someone who was discriminating against me just because of my weight.”
The legal representatives of DeMoss argue that the driver’s actions contravene Michigan’s anti-discrimination laws, which recognize weight as a protected characteristic. This case raises important questions about the implications of weight discrimination in the context of service industries.
In response to the allegations, Lyft has reiterated its commitment to inclusivity, stating that it does not tolerate any form of discrimination. The company emphasized that its community guidelines and terms of service explicitly prohibit harassment or discrimination, indicating that they are taking the matter seriously.
