President Bola Tinubu will spearhead Nigeria’s delegation to the forthcoming 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC), scheduled to take place in Cape Town from 28 November to 3 December. This significant diplomatic engagement aims to foster collaboration between the two nations on a myriad of issues pivotal to their socio-economic development.

The meeting will unfold in several phases: beginning with the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) from 28 to 30 November, followed by a Ministerial Meeting on 2 December, and culminating in a presidential meeting on 3 December. As articulated by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Acting Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these discussions will serve as a platform to elevate Africa’s standing in global politics through collaborative frameworks.

Critical topics on the agenda include security, education, health, and cultural exchange, reflecting the multifaceted partnership between Nigeria and South Africa. Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, will also accompany the delegation, underscoring the importance of this initiative at various levels of governance.

Established to enhance cooperation in defense, technology, culture, and energy, the BNC is poised to strengthen bilateral relations and facilitate consultations on economic and investment opportunities. Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, has reiterated the state government’s commitment to road safety, emphasizing that the recently implemented speed limit enforcement and e-policing camera system is primarily designed to reduce accidents and fatalities, not to generate revenue.

Speaking on a local radio program, Mr. Musa clarified that the initiative aims to curb excessive speeding, a key contributor to road accidents. He stated that compliance with speed limits is crucial for saving lives and preventing injuries, and that the enforcement measures, though often met with resistance, are necessary for public safety.

Further, Mr. Musa addressed concerns regarding potential errors and assured the public that a transparent process exists for contesting perceived wrongful fines. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to equitable enforcement, noting that even government vehicles have been subject to fines for violations. He urged motorists to adhere to posted speed limits, especially along the Alapere axis and the Third Mainland Bridge, and to utilize designated locations for passenger pick-up and drop-off.
