VIDEO: Lagos has demolished 138 shanties where residents were paying between N60,000 to N100,000 in annual rent.
In a decisive move to uphold environmental standards and combat illegal encroachments, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has recently undertaken a demolition exercise in Ajao Estate. The operation targeted 138 unauthorized shanties constructed along the canal bank, where tenants were reportedly paying rents ranging from N60,000 to N100,000 annually.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, detailed the initiative through a series of posts on his official X page. He emphasized that this action is part of the state government’s broader efforts to address environmental violations and restore public spaces.
“The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI, has been mobilized to combat the scourge of environmental infractions,” Wahab stated, revealing videos that capture the demolition process. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining order and sustainability within urban environments.
As Lagos continues to face challenges posed by illegal settlements, such measures are critical in fostering a healthier and more organized community for all residents.
