UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Announces £1.6 Billion Missile Deal for Ukraine.
In a significant boost to Ukraine’s defense capabilities, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Sunday a £1.6 billion ($2 billion) agreement that will facilitate the acquisition of 5,000 air-defense missiles. The announcement was made during a summit held in London, underscoring the United Kingdom’s unwavering support for Ukraine amidst ongoing hostilities.
The deal, set to be executed through export finance, will see the manufacture of lightweight multirole missiles by Thales, a prominent defense technology company. These missiles possess a range exceeding six kilometers (approximately 3.7 miles) and are designed for versatility, capable of being launched from various platforms across land, sea, and air.
Prime Minister Starmer emphasized the critical importance of this deal, stating, “This will be vital for protecting critical infrastructure now and strengthening Ukraine in securing the peace when it comes.” His remarks come on the heels of a recent escalation in conflict, wherein Russia conducted a large-scale drone attack, deploying over 200 drones in a single night — the largest such assault recorded since the onset of the war three years ago.
As the situation in Ukraine remains precarious, this substantial investment from the UK not only aims to enhance Ukraine’s immediate defense capabilities but also reflects a long-term commitment to stability in the region.
