Tragic Plane Crash in Omdurman Claims 46 Lives.
On Tuesday, a Sudanese army Antonov aircraft tragically crashed in a residential area near the Wadi Seidna military airport in northern Omdurman, resulting in the deaths of no fewer than 46 individuals, including both military personnel and civilians. The incident occurred during takeoff, and initial reports indicated that the aircraft struck a civilian home in the Karrari district.
The Khartoum Media Office confirmed on Wednesday that the crash also left at least 10 individuals injured. Among the deceased was Major-General Bahr Ahmed, a senior commander in Khartoum. The Sudanese military, currently engaged in conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, acknowledged the loss of lives in its statement and noted that firefighting teams successfully contained the fire at the crash site.
Witnesses in northern Omdurman reported hearing a loud explosion at the time of the crash, which not only damaged several homes but also caused power outages in the surrounding neighbourhoods. As of now, the cause of the crash remains undetermined, and investigations are likely to follow as authorities seek to uncover the circumstances leading to this devastating event.
