A devastating attack occurred on Sunday night in the Gidan Ado community of the Riyom local government area in Plateau State, resulting in the tragic loss of approximately 14 lives. This incident has been confirmed by Mr. Sam Jugo, the National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Community Development Association (IDA).

According to Mr. Jugo, the attack was reported to Operation Safe Haven, a multi-security task force tasked with maintaining peace in the region. He noted that troops from this operation had responded to the scene. Notably, this incident transpired just two days after the police command had deployed officers to five local government areas, including Riyom, in preparation for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The victims of this heinous act were identified as members of the Irigwe community, hailing from the Bassa local government area. A list of the deceased includes individuals of varying ages, with the youngest victim being just one year old. In addition to the fatalities, one individual, Linda Moses, aged 32, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The leadership of the Irigwe Development Association has expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life, emphasizing their hope for restraint among community members and urging security agencies to take decisive action to prevent future occurrences and potential reprisals.

As of the latest updates, the identities of the attackers remain unknown, and both Operation Safe Haven and police representatives have yet to respond to inquiries regarding the incident.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by communities in Plateau State, particularly during festive periods when families come together to celebrate. The loss of life is not only a profound tragedy for the affected families but also a somber reflection on the need for enhanced security measures and community solidarity in the face of violence.
