Speed Darlington Released from Kuje Prison.
Controversial Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been released from Kuje Prison, as confirmed by activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju on social media platform X. This announcement, made on Tuesday, follows a recent court ruling in Abuja that granted Okoye bail.
The singer’s detention had garnered significant attention, particularly after he publicly accused Grammy Award-winning artist Burna Boy of engaging in an improper relationship with U.S. rapper and music executive Sean Combs, also known as P. Diddy. In light of his continued detention, Okoye petitioned Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Dasuki Galadanchi, urging compliance with a court order addressing the legality of his prolonged detention.
Justice M.S. Liman of the Abuja court mandated that the police either formally charge Okoye within 48 hours or release him. The police, responding to mounting pressure, ultimately opted to take him to court, leading to his release following the recent ruling.
This case highlights broader issues of legal compliance and the rights of individuals in custodial situations within Nigeria’s justice system. Speed Darlington’s release represents not only a personal victory for the artist but also raises important questions about due process and the treatment of detainees.
