On Friday, the British government sentenced Mohammad Farooq, 29, to a minimum of 37 years’ imprisonment for planning a terror attack. Farooq was found guilty of preparing acts of terrorism after a trial at Sheffield Crown Court in July 2023. He had previously pleaded guilty to possessing an explosive substance with intent to endanger life, alongside other related offenses.

The planned attack targeted RAF Menwith Hill, a Royal Air Force base utilized by both British and US forces in North Yorkshire. According to Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb, Farooq, inspired by Islamic State ideology and radicalized online, later shifted his focus to a “softer target” due to the high security surrounding the base.

Farooq was apprehended in January 2023 outside St James’s Hospital in Leeds with a homemade bomb containing approximately 10 kg of explosives extracted from fireworks. Authorities emphasize the gravity of the situation, stating that Farooq “came dangerously close to harming innocent people.” The length of the sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the potential for devastating consequences.
