Scholz Affirms European Cooperation, Cautions US on Tariffs.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking at the Hanover Industrial Trade Fair, reiterated Europe’s desire for continued cooperation with the United States. However, his remarks also underscored a firm stance against potential protectionist measures emanating from Washington. Specifically addressing the prospect of renewed US tariffs on steel and aluminium, Scholz asserted that the European Union stands prepared to act collectively in response.
Furthermore, Chancellor Scholz used the occasion to reaffirm Canada’s independent status, a timely statement given recent rhetoric suggesting otherwise. Highlighting the detrimental effects of trade wars, he emphasized the EU’s commitment to free trade, competitiveness, and technological sovereignty, while signaling that Europe will not hesitate to defend its interests if necessary. His message to the US was clear: while cooperation remains the preferred path, the EU possesses the resolve to act decisively if provoked.
