Resumption of Ground Operations in Gaza: A Fraught Return to Conflict.

Following a period of relative calm, the Israeli military has announced the resumption of ground operations in central and southern Gaza. This development comes on the heels of intense airstrikes resulting in significant Palestinian casualties, effectively ending the ceasefire that had largely been in place since January.

The Israeli military maintains that these operations are aimed at extending control over the Netzarim Corridor and establishing a buffer zone within Gaza. Conversely, Hamas has condemned the actions as a violation of the ceasefire agreement and called upon mediators to intervene.

Adding to the complexity, a strike on a UN facility in Gaza City has resulted in casualties, including the death of a foreign staffer. While the Gaza health ministry attributes the strike to Israel, the Israeli military denies responsibility, alleging the site was a Hamas location. The UN Secretary-General has called for a thorough investigation into the incident, highlighting the escalating dangers faced by UN personnel operating in the region.
