Progress in the Fight Against Banditry: Insights from Major General Ibikunle Ajose.
In a recent address at the 2024 annual West African Social Activities (WASA) event in Sokoto, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, articulated significant advancements in countering banditry and terrorism within his jurisdiction. He reported that numerous bandit leaders and their operatives have been neutralized, signifying steady triumphs for the troops under his command.
General Ajose attributed these successes to the strategic deployment of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Special Intervention Battalion VII in Gudu, complemented by enhanced air assets from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and other vital combat enablers. He emphasized that these resources have effectively acted as force multipliers, bolstering ongoing operations across Sokoto State.
Reaffirming the military’s determination to uphold national security, General Ajose vowed that efforts to restore peace in the region would persist unwaveringly despite existing challenges. He asserted, “We are determined to eliminate all barriers to peace across our area of responsibility to ensure a more secure, peaceful, and prosperous nation.”
Highlighting the broader impact of military actions, the GOC noted that improving security has reinvigorated socio-economic activities within the region. “Farmers and citizens now confidently carry out their daily tasks,” he remarked, acknowledging the restoration of public trust in the military’s capabilities.
Further reinforcing his commitment, General Ajose, who also serves as the Sector 2 Joint Task Force (JTF) Commander for Operation Hadarin Daji in the Northwest, reported the successful completion of all scheduled training activities for the year. This accomplishment came despite the notable challenges faced throughout the period.
General Ajose concluded his address by urging continued vigilance in matters of security and expressing appreciation to Governor Aliyu Sokoto for his unwavering support in fostering lasting peace within the state. His closing remarks encapsulated the essence of the military’s mission: “This success is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our personnel, and we remain resolute in our mission to ensure peace and security across the region.”
As the fight against banditry and terrorism continues, the efforts demonstrated by Major General Ajose and his troops underscore a collective commitment to safeguarding the nation and enhancing the well-being of its citizens.
