The announcement was made during a meeting with the two-time former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, who has been appointed as the state’s official sports ambassador.

Governor Abiodun expressed his enthusiasm for Joshua’s involvement, stating, “We want to request that you come back to light up the Gateway Sports Festival torch.” This festival, originally scheduled for January, has been postponed to May, allowing for greater preparation and participation.

The governor emphasized the importance of local talent, noting that Ogun State is rich in artistic and athletic capabilities. He expressed pride in Joshua’s global achievements and assured the champion of the government’s support in promoting his career. Additionally, the governor proposed collaborative efforts to organize tournaments leading up to the sports festival, inviting Joshua to mentor emerging athletes in the state.
