NYSC Highlights Fraudulent Mobilisation by University of Calabar
In a recent statement, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) addressed a significant case of fraudulent mobilisations linked to the University of Calabar (UNICAL). Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the Director-General of NYSC, revealed that amongst the 54 “graduates” improperly enlisted for the national service, one was a bread seller who had no affiliation with the institution. This incident is part of a disturbing trend identified by the NYSC, which has led to the cancellation of certificates for a total of 178 individuals, including a previous batch of 101 graduates whose certifications were deemed invalid.
The revelation came in a communiqué issued by Eddy Megwa, the Director of Information and Public Relations at NYSC, detailing the ongoing efforts to combat fraudulent recruitment practices. Notably, 19 additional candidates who sought online mobilisation were also thwarted from participating in the scheme, further reinforcing the NYSC’s commitment to integrity in its processes.
General Ahmed commended the proactive stance of Professor Florence Obi, the Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL, who alerted the NYSC to the irregularities in the list of mobilised graduates. Her diligence has been instrumental in identifying discrepancies that allowed unqualified individuals to infiltrate the service, including generating false matriculation numbers and courses.
This episode underscores the importance of vigilance in maintaining the credibility of the NYSC program, which plays a pivotal role in national youth engagement. The NYSC remains resolute in its mission to ensure that only qualified graduates participate in the national service scheme, safeguarding its integrity and the value of its certificates.
