Uyo, Akwa Ibom State – The Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Sergius Onah, has convicted Oguzie Chima Joseph, also known as Sergeant Flores Nguyen, to a two-year prison sentence for internet fraud. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the conviction, stemming from two counts of cybercrime violations.

Joseph was found guilty of fraudulently impersonating a U.S. Army officer on social media to obtain property, a violation of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition, Prevention Etc) (Amendment) Act 2024. He was also convicted of possessing $100 USD derived from unlawful cybercrime activities, contravening the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The defendant pleaded guilty on March 10, 2025. Evidence presented by the prosecution included the defendant’s written statement, an iPhone XR mobile device, and printouts of fraudulent documents. In addition to the concurrent one-year sentences for each count (with an option of a N200,000 fine), the court ordered Joseph to restitute $100 and forfeit his iPhone XR to the government. Joseph’s arrest on December 6, 2024, marked the beginning of his legal journey following intelligence linking him to fraudulent activities using fictitious social media profiles.
