INEC Chairman Commends Ghana’s Electoral Process Following Recent General Election.
Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has publicly praised the recent general election in Ghana, which culminated in the victory of former President John Mahama on December 7, 2024. This election, held amidst significant economic challenges, marks a pivotal moment in Ghana’s political landscape.
In a statement following his observation of the electoral process, Yakubu highlighted the importance of the innovations implemented by Ghana’s Electoral Commission, particularly in enhancing the efficiency and transparency of the electoral process. He noted that the decentralized approach to announcing results at the constituency level, a practice influenced by Nigeria’s electoral system, has contributed to a more effective election outcome.
Yakubu underscored the political stability that characterizes Ghana’s democracy, emphasizing the loyalty of its voters and the consistent support for established political parties. “Rarely in Ghana do you see people moving from one party to another with every general election,” he remarked, pointing out that this stability fosters a reliable political environment.
The INEC Chairman also acknowledged the efforts of both the main opposition candidate and the outgoing President, Nana Akufo-Addo, who has navigated multiple electoral contests. He commended the overall conduct of the election, expressing gratitude for the well-managed process and its commendable results thus far.
As the Ghanaian Electoral Commission prepares to announce the official results by Tuesday, Yakubu’s observations reflect a broader recognition of the significance of Ghana’s electoral integrity and the lessons that can be learned from its practices. The recent election not only signifies a change in leadership but also reinforces the resilience of Ghana’s democratic institutions amidst economic challenges.
